Genealogy Research Online
-
Many people, for various reasons, including physical infirmity or financial reasons are unable to travel or to gather genealogy in person.
Genealogy is still a reasonable hobby for them to undertake simply by virtue of the ease with which you can search the internet to glean information. There are, for those who are unable to go in person for various reasons, literally thousands of records that are posted online currently and are being added day by day to the online resources that are available for the genealogy researcher.
The internet has become a one stop shopping mall for those who are searching for their family trees, for a very good reason. Regardless of what you want to learn about your family, you can find a good bit of information online.
While it is a process that is do-able, its not simply as easy as finding one database that will provide all of the data that you want on all of your ancestors. You’re probably not going to be fortunate enough to find it in one place, however if you love the excitement of hunting down the information and unraveling the mystery of your family tree, not having it laid out for you isn’t going to be troublesome to you.
A good part of genealogy is knowing where to look and how to use the vast array of tools that the internet can offer you, and the foresight to have a bit of information gathered prior to attempting to find what you need online.
Digging up names and a few dates, and then working backward, and seeking in more than one place can provide you not only with your family history and family members, but also where, and sometimes how they may have lived.Every family and every genealogy search is unique to itself.
While that statement is inarguable, it is also inarguable that many of the same steps will be required to search out almost any family tree. One of the smartest things that any genealogy researcher will do is to keep careful notes, both on your computer and off, noting where you’ve gone, what information you found and where you found it, so that when you find a good resource for materials, you don’t lose that.
It’s quite often fun and interesting to glean a unique new source of materials or to dig up an obscure web site featuring some of your family grave sites, but when you are required to hunt for that again, it becomes less interesting and a lot less fun.
As you seek out information on yours, or any other family in the online venue, keep careful records of what information that you find, and not only the place that you found it, but how you came upon that web site, so that you can offer that advice to other people and keep the resource for yourself.
I have made a habit of downloading particularly good informational sources, or at least the pages that I ‘ve used, in that web sites have a habit of not remaining online at all times. Sadly some of the best disappear for various reasons. When I find one that offers me a great source of information, I take the page that I used and using the available part of each browser, click on file, and “save page as” in order to make that available to me when I am working offline as well.
